Once upon a time about twenty billion years ago, there was nothing. Then that nothing evolved into a small dot that held all the space, time, matter, and energy in the universe.  The dot was smaller than a period on this paper.  When all the space, time, matter, and energy formed the dot, it started spinning out of control and got so dizzy it exploded.  This is what we know today as the Big Bang.  Evolutionists have faith that this Big Bang happened, but Creationists know that the true Big Bang has not happened yet: “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare” (2 Peter 3:10).

Because of the imagination it takes to believe in the Big Bang Theory, this paper will examine other arguments made by evolutionists compared to creationist arguments, specifically the argument regarding a common ancestor. Creationism is a better theory than evolution to explain the workings of the universe because the evolutionists’ argument of the common ancestor theory has little to no scientific evidence to support it. Not only is creationism a better argument than evolution, but this paper makes the argument that individuals cannot logically believe in evolution and in Christianity without contradicting their beliefs.

 Definition of Evolution

To begin, there are seven different types of evolution: Cosmic, Stellar, Chemical, Planetary, Organic, Macro, and Micro Evolution. Cosmic evolution is what is considered the Big Bang theory, while stellar evolution is when the stars were formed (“Theory of Evolution”). Chemical evolution is where all of the elements that we see today came into existence. The time when the planets and the galaxies came into existence and was formed is considered planetary evolution while organic evolution is the theory that Earth began as a molten rock and when it cooled, the water and rock formed organic life (“Theory of Evolution”). The macro-evolution theory states that the different types of animals evolved into different species while the micro-evolution theory claims that plants and animals change within their same species (“Theory of Evolution”).

Richard Dawkins, evolutionist, Zoologist, atheist, and author, discusses evolution in most of his writings.  In Dawkin's book The Greatest Show on Earth, he discusses why he thinks evolution is true: he states, “This book is about positive evidence that evolution is a fact (Dawkins 6). Dawkins is a proponent of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Although Darwin did not have the first theory of evolution, his is the most well known. Darwin’s theory of evolution states that all life is related from plants to fish from land animals to birds. Everything evolved in slow, gradual processes of natural selection with beneficial mutations (“Darwin’s Theory…”).

Definition of Creationism

There are two main types of creationists which are young earth and old earth creationists (Six Days and the Eisegesis Problem).  Old earth creationists branch out into five other groups of creation beliefs.  The old earth group has one thing in common is that they all want to add millions of years to the bible.  Old earth creationists believe that evolutionists have proven that the age of the earth is 4.5 billion years old, and not six thousand years old like the bible says.  Old earth creationists take man’s word that has not always been there over God’s word that has always been there (Six Days and the Eisegesis Problem).  This paper is going to look at the one, true biblical interpretation of the bible, which is the earth was created in a literal six, twenty four hour time frame.  This is the core basis for all young earth creationists’ beliefs.

Creationists believe space, time, and matter are not eternal, and God created everything: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, and the earth was without form and void and darkness was on the face of the deep” (Genesis 1:1-2). The first day God created the heavens, earth, the waters that were before dry land, and light. However, that light was not from the sun.  The glory of God is what lit up the earth the first day.  That is how it is going to be in heaven because there is no day or night in heaven (Revelation 22:5). On the second day God made the atmosphere.  Also, He divided the waters, in which He put a layer of water under the earth and above the earth (Genesis 1:6-7).

The top layer of water around the earth acted as a canopy around the earth which made the climate on earth like a greenhouse. The canopy also blocked out ultraviolet light, therefore everything on earth would live longer. The third day God laid the grass on the earth, and created all the fruit trees and plants according to its kind (Genesis 1:11). On day four God created the sun, moon, and stars (Genesis 1:14-19). Day five God filled the oceans with all the water creatures according to their kind, and placed all the birds in the sky according to their kind (Genesis 1:20-23). The sixth day God made all the land creatures according to their kind. He also made man in His own image and likeness, and God gave man dominion over every living thing on the earth (Genesis 1:24-28). God made both man and animals vegetarians (Genesis 1:29, 2:16-17, 3:17-19).  After the flood, both humans and animals were allowed to eat meat (Genesis 9:3).

Common Ancestor/ Common Designer
Evolutionists say that homologous structures and homologous chromosomes are proof for a common ancestor. Dawkins states, “It is the plain truth that we are cousins of chimpanzees, somewhat more distant cousins of monkeys, more distant cousins still of aardvarks and manatees, yet more distant cousins of bananas and turnips…continue the list as long as desired” (Dawkins 8).  The proof for this statement is homologous chromosomes, which simply means that related animals have closely the same DNA but with slight differences.  Therefore, evolutionists say they have to be related by a common ancestor: Dawkins states, “The evidence for evolution is at least as strong as the evidence for the Holocaust, even allowing for eye-witnesses to the Holocaust” (Dawkins 8).  Evolutionists say this is strong evidence because many animals have homologous and analogous structures, which proves that the like-animals had a common ancestor.  The definition of homologous structure is when animals have similar but different skeletal structures.  Analogous structures are the same structures on different animals. For example, wings on butterflies, bats, and birds are analogous structures (Analogous / Homologous Structures).

However, Creationists beg to differ.  There is absolutely no scientific evidence that can prove that homologous and analogous structures are proof for a common ancestor.  The only scientific conclusion that one can come to about homologous and analogous structures is that they have similar characteristics.  Creationists believe what the bible says happened about six thousand years ago, when God created everything.  Therefore, it is not a common ancestor, but a common designer.  Evolutionists also talk about how homologous chromosomes are proof for evolution; however, one cannot tell that two different types of animals are related just by DNA. Would that not mean we are related to tobacco? Humans’ DNA and the DNA of tobacco are very similar. Evolutionists say that because humans share 98 percent of DNA from chimpanzees, we are related to them (Lies in the Textbooks).  For example, the television show “Maury” can only prove who two of the three common creators or parents of the baby were.  Although parents on the “Maury” show can be proved using DNA, one cannot say that similar DNA of two totally different types of animals proves that they can be related because two different types of animals cannot reproduce.  In Genesis, chapter one, it says nine times that everything was created according to its kind. If God created everything according to its kind, then nothing could have ever evolved.  Scientists also believe other primitive creatures, such as dinosaurs, have evolved into birds.

Most paleontologists say that birds are the direct ancestors of certain dinosaurs - as opposed to being ancestors of some other group of reptiles.  Paleontologists also agree that birds and reptiles share a common ancestor because they both have homologous structures, lay eggs, and have scales, but in birds, the scales are only found on the legs of the birds.  In 1868, Thomas Huxley was the first person to theorize the common descent of dinosaurs to birds.  Huxley came to the conclusion that birds are directly related to dinosaurs because of his studies of the Archaeopteryx fossil that was found in 1861 but was later labeled as the missing link between reptiles to birds. John Ostrom is one of the leading researchers on how dinosaurs and birds are related. Ostrom stated that Archaeopteryx that it was the link between reptiles and birds.  Many new fossil findings in Mongolia, China, Spain, Argentina, and Australia have expanded on what we know about the early history of birds. Most paleontologists say that even the turkey is a common ancestor of dinosaurs. This evolutionary example is one in which creationists believe to be false (Projeta, John Jr. and Dale A. Springer).

Creationists believe in a common designer, not a common ancestor. One thing scientists forget to mention is the fact that the Archaeopteryx could be a distinct animal separate from reptiles, dinosaurs, and birds. If that is the case, then the skeletons of dinosaurs, birds, and the Archaeopteryx would be an example for the case of a common designer, not ancestor.

Although evolutionists believe birds were derived from dinosaurs, in Genesis, chapter eight, Noah released a dove, or a bird, from the ark in order to find land: “He also sent out from himself a dove to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground. But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot and she returned into the ark to him for the waters were on the face of the whole earth” (Genesis 8:8-9). If birds are directly descended from dinosaurs, where does Noah get the dove and all of the other birds he places on the ark? What about the pterodactyl? Where does this animal fit in, bird or dinosaur? From the evolutionary standpoint, these are questions without answers, but from the creationists’ view, the answer is a common designer. The common ancestor argument is not the only issue on which evolutionists try to prove evolution as correct.

Christianity versus Evolution

Everything in evolution is the polar opposite of biblical creation.  “Not only does evolution not need to be guided in any way, but any conscious, sentient guide would have to be a monster of the most sadistic type: for evolution is not pretty, is not gentle, is not kind, is not compassionate, is not loving. Evolution is blind, and brutal, and callous” (Kirby).  On the other hand, God is all loving, all compassionate, and all knowing.  He used His infinite wisdom to guide creation on Earth and make everything perfectly in six literal twenty-four days.  Being that evolutionists do not believe that there is a God, they do not believe there is a need for the Savior Jesus Christ.  They do not believe in Adam and Eve or the fall of man because everything to evolutionists evolved through slow gradual processes over billions of years of natural selection.  They believe in so-called beneficial mutations when the reality is that mutations cause a loss of information, so in reality there is no such thing as a beneficial mutation. The only evidence evolutionists have for proof of evolution, is how bacteria becomes resistant to antibiotics, which happens all the time. When the mutation takes place, it does not last long enough for it to become a new species and for it to evolve into another species according to (Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria).

According to evolution, death brought man into the world.  In creation, man brought death into the world because in Adam all die (1 Corinthians 15:22): “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12).  Evolutionists also believe that the sun existed before the earth. The bible teaches the exact opposite; the sun was created after the earth.  Unlike creationists, evolutionists believe that the stars evolved right after the big bang, which would make the stars come before the earth (White, A.J. Monty).  The bible specifically states in the very first verse that “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). God took His time and made the stars on the fourth day. Therefore, people cannot say that they believe in both Christianity and evolution because one contradicts the other. If a person states that he or she does believe in God and evolution, then he or she contradicts his or her beliefs about either one.

This paper has discussed how people who believe in evolution have to assume that certain things happened for their theory to be true. Many evolutionists presuppose that there is no God, and therefore, they do not believe in Adam or Eve and can accept that humans evolved from lower animals. Creationists believe that homology cannot be proof for evolution because creationists believe in a common designer or maker not a common ancestor that evolved by chance. Although some Christians might state that they believe in evolution, this paper argues that the theory of evolution contradicts every aspect of Christianity. Therefore, it is impossible for individuals to reconcile a belief in Christianity and evolution without going against what the Bible clearly teaches. Christianity is better than evolution because, with Christianity, there is a hope and reason to live. With evolution, there is hope only in created things, not eternal things: “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26).
